I don’t have a fully equipped studio to work out in, but I can still do a full workout!
For many years I have experienced and loved the benefits of exercise known as Pilates. But when I met Proper Pilates I discovered something different…in a very good way. Wade and Trevor were accomplished in and enthusiastic about teaching classical Pilates. Having trained as a teacher in contemporary Pilates I had learned some exercises that were related to the classical repertoire. However, finding teachers who were expert in teaching all comers the original exercises really extended my capacity and understanding of Contrology.
You can imagine my distress when the Melbourne studio was closed and I could only find these amazing teachers in Kyneton! But I had found something that was worth driving 90 minutes to have. So off I went. However, my practice really took off with the introduction of online classes.
I was more than skeptical at first. I am not a Facebook person, I don’t Tweet and I still think email has caused as many problems as it has advantages, so how could on line Pilates work? How wrong I was. Classes are as engaging, connected and as lively as being in the studio. The teachers can see everything you do or don’t do and the verbal cuing and teaching is just like you are with them in the studio.
Along with the online classes, the system of individualized work in a group setting with teachers overseeing what you do, has changed my experience of Pilates completely. It has allowed me to train multiple times a week for the same cost as one private. I am learning the repertoire and so am not reliant on someone telling what to do each moment of a workout. This makes me much more independent and deepens my understanding of what I am doing. I feel like I own my practice and I work with the PP teachers to enhance my execution. Brain and body working.
I have only 3 pieces of equipment and the space of a small bedroom to workout in, but I still get huge benefit. My body has changed. Even though I am about to enter my 7th decade I am able to do things I couldn’t do 10 years ago. Getting older certainly doesn’t mean getting weaker or less capable physically.
Learning the original Pilates repertoire and how it applies to each body shows what a magnificent system Joseph Pilates created. It is wonderful to learn it and celebrate his genius every time I work out.
