Owner and Training Director

Wade Edwell first certified with Michael King Pilates in 2002, then later with the APMA under Neil Nabberfield.  After graduating with Distinction in Dance at the Western Australian Academy of Performing Arts he shifted to Europe and encountered Classical Pilates while dancing in Berlin.  While at WAAPA he also trained in Grahram technique, Ideokinesis and Feldenkrais through Reyes De Lara, as well as Cunningham technique through Nanette Hassall, which greatly inform the way he sees and applies guidance to the moving body through traditional Pilates exercises.

While his Classical Pilates experiences are varied, including personal tutoring under Tiziana Trovati (2nd generation to Romana Kryzanowska), Wade’s work now focuses deeply on both mastering and delivering the system as it is remembered by Jay Grimes (Pilates Elder).  His teaching greatly reflects his training experiences with Vintage Pilates (Los Angeles) and Jay, and in particular his significant experiences with his mentor Sandy Shimoda (Vintage Pilates Owner).

Most importantly, Wade is one of less than 70 worldwide graduates, and the only in Australasia, of The Work with Vintage Pilates- a select entry program that accepts only twelve applicants worldwide each year.

In Dance he has performed in works for choreographers Melanie Lane, Nanette Hassall, Sue Peacock, Aimee Smith, and Alice Lee Holland.  His work on the relationship between architecture and movement was a finalist in the 2009 Australian Choreographic Competition.  In the same year he was asked to reproduce this work on a group of senior students of the Western Australian Dance School of Excellence Program at Hampton SHS.  In 2010 he was selected to premiere a work (Pulse) on students of WAAPA for their mid year dance season.

Wade also holds a Bachelor of Business in Marketing and Public Relations, and certificates in both Photography and Fitness.  For a time he managed careers in both business and fitness.  While employed as Director of Marketing for Her Majesty’s Theatre in Melbourne, he was also selected as Australian National Presenter of Les Mill’s international fitness training programs, Body Jam and Body Step.  He is also a former regional fitness manager for what was at the time Zest Health Clubs, and subsequently Executive Group Fitness Director for all Recreation Health Clubs.

Through Proper Pilates he hopes to carry on the traditional experience of Pilates training by opening the method up to clients and teachers, and bringing about an understanding that traditional Pilates exists beyond the ‘exercises,’ in a deeper appreciation and application of the philosophies of Contrology.

Owner, Manager, Trainer

Born and raised in Trentham, Trevor brings to his craft over two decades worth of movement teaching and experience, having both danced and taught dance since his early teens. On completion of a Certificate in Dance through DanceWorld, his passion for fine arts dance led him to complete a Bachelor of Dance through the Victorian College of the Arts (VCA), and this is where he first encountered Pilates, subsequently certifying with Peak Pilates. While in Melbourne he performed in works by Rebecca Hilton, Jenny Kinder, KAGE directors Gerard Van Dych and Kate Denborough, Jacob Lehrer and Sandra Parker.

Subsequently, Trevor moved to Western Australia and performed in works with Strut Dance.  While in Perth his passion for educating others, in particular young adults, in correct movement practices led Trevor to  complete Post-Graduate studies through Edith Cowan University (ECU) to teach Dance, Health and Physical Education for VCE.  Following this Trevor was made Head of Dance for Merredin High School. During his time at Merredin, Trevor established the inaugural program of VCE level Dance to prepare students of excellence to meet tertiary Dance entrance requirements.  Further to this Trevor established a curricular syllabus for students with special needs, to better help these students find their place within education and beyond.

Trevor relocated to Melbourne after being recruited to the position as Head of Dance at Albert Park College.  Significantly Trevor was employed at APC to institute their inaugural Dance curriculum, with a major focus on implementing new technologies into learning processes.  While at APC he continued to coach excellence students towards tertiary entrance requirements.  Eventually Trevor left this role to move into full time Pilates practice with his partner Wade.

As well as continuing his Pilates work and ongoing training with Wade and Dena Drotar (LA), Trevor is dedicated to academic practice, and is now completing further studies in Exercise and Sports Science through the University of New England.

Through Proper Pilates he hopes to inspire everyone to juice more out of their physical and mental workout, and understand we are all more capable than we know and give ourselves credit for.
